Every one of our students gets the opportunity to participate in our library program. In our Beginners program, students welcome Ms. Bridget, our Library Specialist, to their classroom once a week. She brings a number of books on a particular theme, along with a puppet or other toy, and reads aloud for the students. At this age, we are hoping to introduce students to books and ignite a love for reading.

In our Children’s House program, students visit our on campus library every two weeks. At this age, they are learning how a library is organized, what the process of checking books out looks like, and how to choose a book. The Library Specialist may choose a book to read aloud or may invite students to do some independent reading in one of the cozy corners of the space. During every visit, children are given time to explore the library and choose a book to take home for two weeks.

In the Lower Elementary program, students also visit the library once every two weeks. At this stage, in addition to browsing and checking out books, students are learning basic media literacy skills and are continuing to develop their appreciation for literature.

In the Upper Elementary program, students have the ability to visit the library independently. They may work with the Library Specialist to find resources on a particular academic topic or to discover a new novel to dive into. Upper Elementary students also participate in weekly Literacy Groups where they practice the skills of literature discussion and exploration. One of the Literacy Groups meets weekly with the Library Specialist.

All students have access to our library software with a unique username and password, where they can see what books they have checked out, browse the library catalog, and find helpful literary resources. Our school library homepage can be viewed at the top of this section.

Naturalist Program

The 2023-2024 school year marked the first year that Summit Montessori School has an  Naturalist on campus! Ms. Jean, who has been at Summit for over two decades and who has always had a passion for all things nature, has officially pivoted to take on the role.

Ms. Jean meets with students at every level. They learn about topics such as the plant cycle, food waste, native species, and pollinators. They take care of our raised garden beds and plant indoors during the winter. The students, with Ms. Jean’s help, implemented a campus-wide composting program. The Upper Elementary took on the responsibility of collecting the food scraps from across the school.

Music

All the students at Summit participate in our Music program. Students in the Beginners and Children’s House programs welcome Ms. Jackie to their classrooms once a week. They sing songs while Ms. Jackie accompanies on guitar, they get to learn about and explore different instruments, and they begin to develop music appreciation.

Ms. Jackie has spent a lifetime learning, practicing, writing, teaching, and performing music. She has been at Summit for over a decade.

At the Elementary level, they begin working with Ms. Laura once a week to grow their musical skills. Ms. Laura is a professional musician specializing in voice and piano who has experience in various roles working with children.

Spanish

Starting in Children’s House, students meet once weekly with Señora Kim. The focus of these classes is cultural appreciation as well as basic vocabulary and conversational skills. Many students continue with their study of Spanish as they leave Summit for other schools.

Señora Kim teaches Spanish at two other schools including a Spanish Immersion program and has been working with children for 11 years.

Physical Education

Starting in Kindergarten, children visit Coach Talor once a week to do a Physical Education class. They exercise, play sports, and continue to develop their gross motor skills.

Coach Talor owns his own fitness business and has been working with children for over 15 years.

Studio Art

While all the classrooms incorporate Art into their daily classroom work, starting in Kindergarten, students get the chance to visit Ms. Catherine in the Art Studio once a week. They study Art Theory, learn about famous artists and various genres, and they use a multitude of different media techniques to create their own artwork. The work done in Studio Art class often aligns with the same topis that are being studied in the classroom.

Starting in Lower Elementary, students begin visiting the Art Studio twice a week.

Ms. Catherine has a background in both visual arts and fashion design, and has taught art in public schools and at Danforth Art School. Some recent art projects include designing and creating a quilt to be hung in our Community Room, creating Starry Night landscapes inspired by Vincent Van Gogh, Edvard Munch, and Maxfield Parrish, and creating self-portraits that were featured on our yearly holiday cards that go out to our entire community.
